Legacy's History

Church Planting Heritage:  Legacy Baptist Church comes from a rich heritage of church planting.  In 1995, RocketCity Community Church (now called CrossPointe Church) was started by three founding pastors (Bruce & Marlina Martin, Roy & Tammy Hayes and Bobby & Angie Gordon) who moved to Huntsville to begin a church that would reach the Greater Huntsville Area and beyond.  In 1998, The Church at Hampton Cove (now called Rivertree Church) was co-sponsored by RocketCity Community Church and Huntsville’s First Baptist Church).  Bobby Gordon served as founding co-pastor along with Keith Miller.  In January of 2007, with the approval of the elders, Keith started Life’s Journey in Southeast Huntsville and Bobby started Legacy in Northeast Huntsville.

Early Core Development Days:  The early days of Legacy were very challenging!  A core group of families (Gordons, Smiths, Pierces, Bakers, Weimers, Straders, Keels, Cooks, Barinagas and Calverts) were willing to help start the church, but were unable to find a suitable place to meet for Sunday morning worship.  In late February of 2007, the core families decided to begin meeting in a rented space off Ryland Pike used by the Keel’s for their gymnastic’s business.  During this time Legacy began reaching out to Northeast Huntsville with water distributions on opening day of Central’s Baseball Park; Backyard Bible Clubs and a Sport’s Camp.  Mission teams from Woodridge Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana and Hallsville FBC in Texas came to help with these outreach activities.

Facility Transitions:  In November of 2007 a decision was made to have small group meetings in homes on Sunday mornings.  Northeast Huntsville Community Church had offered for Legacy to use their facility for worship services on Sunday evenings.  Legacy struggled to gain momentum during this season, but finally found a suitable store front facility on Winchester Road to rent and prepare for an official launch.

Finally, The Launch!  After several months of getting the facility ready, Legacy officially launched on Easter Sunday, March 23rd, 2008.  Attendance on the first Sunday was 75 and the church averaged 48 in attendance over the next nine months.  Highlights during these humble beginnings were the baptisms of Ian Strader and Riley Gordon; the church’s support of the Gordon’s adoption of Danni from China; Mission teams coming to Huntsville to help us; Learning to persevere as we wait and depend upon God.
